A meat cleaver is a type of knife that you use to very quickly and easily cut
large pieces of meat.
They come in many different sizes, and are great for cutting anything from a leg
of lamb to large roasts.
Meat cleavers do their job as well as they do because they are weighted at the
end with a larger blade than a regular knife.
While a normal kitchen knife has a long narrow blade, a meat cleaver’s blade is
shorter, but wider and heavier. This is what gives a meat cleaver it’s distinctive look: the shape
of the blade.
The blade is a bit thicker than that of a normal knife, and it is much wider.
We've included pictures of several meat cleavers on this site.

In a way, the blade of a meat cleaver resembles the front part of the blade of an axe. This both gives the
cleaver added cutting power and also more control. A meat cleaver is usually more of a chopping tool than a
slicing tool, and it is designed accordingly.
You might not be cutting fine breakfast steaks with a meat cleaver, but you will definitely be
able to chop that roast into two pieces a lot easier than you could slice it with a normal knife!

If you are in the market for a meat cleaver, then there are a few things to think about. The
main thing to decide on is whether you are going to buy a name brand meat cleaver, or buy a simple, cheap meat
cleaver for use in your kitchen. Reputable brands include Global, Wusthof and Henckels, to name a few. A name brand
meat cleaver may cost more, but it will definitely last longer.

A meat cleaver is certainly a type of kitchen knife that gets abuse, due to the hardy nature of its duties; this means that
buying a cheap meat cleaver might come back to haunt you when it breaks down the road.
So, if you use this tool very much at all in the kitchen, it is definitely recommended that you
buy one that is made by a respectable company that you know will design a meat cleaver that will last.
Now, on the other hand, if you only need to use it once, you might as well just buy a cheap one,
but buying a better one will enable you to get a lot more use out of it in the years to come. A good meat cleaver
will last you years, as opposed to a cheap meat cleaver; this will last you months at best under rigorous use.

Another thing to consider when buying a meat cleaver is what size you will get. Obviously,
different sized jobs require different sized meat cleavers, so choose your size accordingly.
If you are planning on butchering a cow, it will take a much larger meat cleaver to do so than
if you were just going to cut breakfast sausages! So, plan accordingly, and you should be able to figure out the
best size for you, and for the job at hand.
